The Obligations of Forgiveness

Elul 19/August 25, 2013—

When one who has hurt us sincerely asks for forgiveness, we are obligated to forgive. When we have mercy on another, God has mercy on us. When we have no mercy for another, God has no mercy for us.                                      (Tanhuma, Vayera, 30)

For reflection:  Think of your own experience and how you felt to turn away someone’s request for forgiveness?  If your petition for forgiveness was ever refused, what did you go throught?  Mercy – rachamim – is a quality that comes to us at birth, from the rechem, the womb.  We grant someone new life when we accept their sincere petition with mercy.
