Cruel to Be Kind

Elul 15/August 21, 2013—

Whoever exercises mercy where strictness is required, will eventually be cruel where kindness is required.

(Midrash Kohelet Rabbah, 7:33)

For reflection: Our human tendencies are more often to be merciful with ourselves and strict with others, when perhaps the opposite is exactly what is needed. Hold yourself to a high standard and expectation in this work of cheshbon nefesh (soul accounting). And, as you desire open-hearted forgiveness, be gracious to those who seek the same from you.
