God Is Our Ultimate Parent

Elul 2/August 8, 2013—  It is the way of the father to be compassionate and it is the way of the mother to comfort. The Holy One said: “I will act like a father and a mother.”

(Pesikta de Rav Kahana, 19:3)

For reflection: With great hope, our parents raise us to be mentschen– decent, kind human beings. Part of being a mentsch is to own up to our transgressions, knowing that we will be supported in our repentance by our compassionate father and our comforting mother. How will a compassionate presence (non-judgmental, relieving suffering) be of support to you in this journey? How will the maternal comfort aid you in your cheshbon hanefesh (an inventory of the soul)?
